A Tidal Wave of State Meet Success for the Roos!

Charly Avril had an 8 sec course best on the day!
Belmont Plateau, Philadelphia, PA- It was another great day to be a Roo as the AFS XC team continued their streak of impressive racing this past weekend at the PA Independent Schools State Meet.  The meet showcased five races starting with the freshman 3k, to the JV 5k’s, and ended with the varsity 5k championship races.  The goal of our day was to create energy on the course, inspire our teammates, and to collectively push that energy forward throughout each race.  In the end, we made it happen in a BIG way with 5 personal bests, 5 Belmont Plateau course bests, and 1 Freshman 3k win out of 12 chances.

Freshman Keith Robinson and Sky Chen set the tone for the day in the Freshman 3k inspiring a wave energy that lasted all afternoon.  Keith notched the first win of his high school career in a dominant 10:58 performance and if raced over 5,000 meters would have been an 18:15 5k.  That is a massive performance for Keith considering he owns a 19:48 5k personal best.  Sky turned in a 13:05 performance to finish in 14th place and continue his upward trajectory as potential impact runner on next years team.

The JV races featured two more impressive performances to continue building our momentum.  Loren Lei had a breakthrough performance running a personal best and Belmont Plateau best in 24:38.  That represents nearly a 5 minute improvement for Loren from his season opening race of 29:32.  In the girls JV race, Jane Mills took off 39 seconds from her personal best despite some late race challenges to finish in 28:41.  In the end, Jane improved 3 minutes 49 seconds from her first to last race.

We capped our day with the Boys Championship and Girls Championship races.  The boys finished 11th overall with their finest performance of the season.  Von Curry led the way for the Roos medaling in 17th place with a 27 second personal best and 93 second Belmont Plateau course best.  Dexter Zapf continued his strong sophomore season with a 10 second personal best and 14 second Belmont Plateau course best to finish in 28th place.  Noah Vinogradov (66th, 19:31- 28 sec Belmont course best), Toby Avery (69th, 19:41- 18 sec Belmont Plateau course best), and Noah Pearce (79th, 19:52- first career sub 20 race and 57 sec course best) provided our best 3-4-5 combo of the season to ensure our 11th place team finish with a season best 18:59 team average.  Justin Forbes (86th, 20:19) and Liam Merritt (97th, 21:09- 28 second course best) each turned in big personal efforts to ensure our great day.

The Girls Championship race was our final race of the day and featured Charly Avril and Mya Osborne.  Charly and Mya did not disappoint as both turned in excellent Belmont Plateau course bests. Charly finished 41st overall with an 8 sec course best and Mya had a 37 sec course best to finish 68th overall.

Next up for the Roos is the Nike Cross Regional Championships at Bowdoin Park in Poughkeepsie, NY on Thanksgiving weekend.
